Report | Panorama of China’s semiconductor wafer industry in 2022

preface:
The semiconductor wafer industry belongs to the field of electronic materials. Its upstream link is the manufacturing of electronic polysilicon, and its downstream link is the manufacturing of semiconductor devices. Its main application fields include automobile, consumer electronics, medical treatment, communications, etc.

China’s semiconductor wafer industry chain involves electronic grade polysilicon manufacturing, semiconductor wafer manufacturing, semiconductor device manufacturing and other links. Among them, the electronic grade polysilicon, the raw material of the upstream semiconductor wafer, mainly depends on imports, and only a few companies can produce it in batches.
In the manufacturing of semiconductor silicon wafers, the most commonly used large-size silicon wafers (8-12 inches) in China are mainly imported, and only a few enterprises can produce them in batches. The manufacturers of Shanghai Silicon Industry and Zhonghuan Co., Ltd. have the production capacity of 8-inch silicon wafers, and have achieved the mass production of 12-inch silicon wafers.
Monocrystalline silicon chips have penetrated into various fields of national economy and national defense science and technology. More than 95% of semiconductor devices and more than 99% of integrated circuits in the current electronic and communication semiconductor market need to use single crystalline silicon chips.
According to the data of the IPO prospectus of Shanghai Silicon Industry Group Co., Ltd. in April 2019, with the production of various semiconductor manufacturing production lines in China, the continuous progress of China’s semiconductor manufacturing technology and the rapid development of China’s semiconductor terminal product market, the semiconductor silicon chip market in Chinese Mainland has entered a stage of rapid development. From 2016 to 2018, The sales volume of semiconductor silicon chips in Chinese Mainland rose from US $500 million to US $992 million, with a compound annual growth rate of 41%.
According to the annual compound growth rate, the sales of semiconductor monocrystalline silicon chips in Chinese Mainland in 2020 will be about US $2 billion. In the future, with the continuous production of 8-inch and 12-inch monocrystalline silicon wafers in China, the domestic monocrystalline silicon market will usher in rapid development.
At present, with the upgrading of DRAM, NAND flash memory and other technologies, the demand for 12-inch monocrystalline silicon chips has increased sharply. Monocrystalline silicon chips of 6 inches and below are mainly used in the field of general consumer electronic components. 8-inch monocrystalline silicon chips are mainly used in integrated circuits, chips and industrial electronic components.
With the improvement of monocrystalline silicon manufacturing technology, silicon wafer products show a trend of size improvement. According to SEMI report, 12-inch silicon chips will be the mainstream products in the market in 2020, accounting for about 68.4%, 8-inch silicon chips for about 25.4%, and 6-inch and below silicon chips for about 6.2%.
Semiconductor equipment suppliers have different views on the process of 18-inch (450mm) silicon wafers and lack the enthusiasm for research and development and production. The reason is that the 18-inch (450mm) equipment is not simply to enlarge the diameter of the cavity, but needs to fundamentally redesign the equipment, so it faces problems such as funds and manpower. So far, the 18-inch (450mm) silicon wafer is still in the stage of technological research and development, and has not yet formed a mass production scale. It is still a problem to be solved for the global semiconductor industry.
